Welcome to this week's Praxis Spanish help.
Let me tell you what most prep guides miss.
The Praxis Spanish listening section has a quirk.
And most prep guides and most YouTube videos about this test get it completely wrong.
Today I'm going to show you exactly how it works.
Then I'm going to handle a real Spanish audio clip live on camera.
First listen preview.
Second listen answer time.
The way the test actually runs.
Quick question before we start.
Which Spanish dialect is hardest for you to understand?
The listening Iberian, Caribbean, Mexican or Andean.
Drop it in the comments.
The most mentioned dialect is the one I'll use for the next listening demo.
First, quick setup.
two parts, the screen flow, then the strategy.
Here is the screen flow.
Most prep guides don't tell you.
On each listening item, the audio plays twice.
But and this is the part that matters, you do not see the questions.
During the first playback.
The audio plays, you listen.
The questions are not on the screen.
After the first playback ends, the questions appear, all six of them, and you get a 60 second preview window to read them before the audio plays again.
Then the audio plays a second time while the questions are not visible.
Then you have about 20 seconds per question to lock in your answers.
That flow changes everything about how you should listen the first time.
Here is the strategy.
In one sentence, the two playbacks have two completely different jobs.
The first listen is for the big picture.
Who is talking to whom, where, about what topic, in what tone?
That's it.
Five things.
Big picture only.
The second listen.
Once you can see the questions is for the specifics, names, numbers, reasons, dates.
The questions tell you what to listen for and you hunt.
Most teachers waste the first listen trying to transcribe everything.
You can't write fast enough at native speed.
You miss the next sentence while writing the last one.
And by the second listen, you have no big picture frame to hang the details on.
Today I'm doing it the right way.
Live.
Let's go.
Okay, first listen.
Big picture only.
I'm listening for who, to whom, where, topic, tone.
That's it.
So we are going to listen to, the news report, on, noticias caracol, and I am going to play this video, 2 minutes and 15ish 15ish seconds.
and then we're gonna answer those, five questions.
Okay?
So ready, set, go.
Pudo certes.
Okay, so that was our audio.
I will put the link to this video in the description box in case you want to listen or watch.
So, I just jot down those, answers to those five questions.
Who, to whom, where, topic, and tone.
So who, who was, this communidad.
right.
Ellos.
maltrataban taban los aves.
Right.
To whom, And topic, topic was that, era un cambio total.
Right?
so that was the kind of the gist of it.
And tone was feliz.
and also it was a cambio total.
So it was kind of good news.
So the tone was very positive, happy.
So those my kind of notes.
And I'm going to show you, what I wrote here in my notes to those five questions.
And now we are going to, look at those six questions.
But before that again, once those six questions appear, we're going to read those six questions quickly and identify question types, what the questions are asking.
Right?
And mentally flag keywords, while we are listening, what we need to be listening for.
And also assign a hunt target to each question.
So before the second audio begins, you should know exactly what you're listening for in each of the six questions.
And these are our six questions.
Actually, I need to set my timer, 60 seconds, right?
So I have a timer on my screen.
So here you are.
We have 60 seconds.
Sorry about that, guys.
Okay, timer is on.
So we are going to look at the big picture.
the main idea of the news report.
so that's a why?
Question why there was a violence in the community.
Right.
against those, birds.
number three.
Que permetio el cambio de actitud hacia las aves what specifically made a change, of attitude, towards those birds?
What is the purpose of this, news report?
So those are six questions.
We're going to listen again, and we're going to now, listen for details and, answers to these six questions OK.
Second listen this time.
Listen with the questions in mind when you hear a specific detail, the question asked about pin it jot a quick note next to the relevant question on your scratch surface, so please don't transcribe sentences.
You are collecting evidence for the questions in front of you.
When the audio ends, you should have at least the partial answer marked for each of the six questions, so I'm going to play again and Look for answers to those six questions.
OK, so that is our second time listening the audio.
And now we are going to answer the questions So we are going to work the questions in order.
If you are certain, answer fast and move on.
Like, going with this, going with B.
If you are stuck on one, eliminate the two.
Most extreme answer.
Choices first, usually the ones with absolute language.
Siempre, nunca, todos.
Then pick between the remaining two.
Inference questions are often answerable from the big picture work you did on the first.
Listen, the speaker's tone is critical maps back to what you captured at the start and never leave a blank.
There is no penalty for guessing, always pick something.
¿Okay?
And we're gonna have twenty seconds each to confirm and submit each answer.
¿Okay?
¿So that is the correct answer, right?
It didn't even talk about this.
¿So the correct answer is B.
¿That is the correct answer, right?
So here, I was thinking about la llegada de turistas extranjeros y B la implementación de un proceso educativo ambiental.
The correct answer is B, la implementación de un proceso educativo ambiental.
So it was saying about environmental education.
So the correct answer is B.
¿So that's the correct answer, because it was saying, remember, it was a hero completo, right?
Cambio total.
So, those are kind of evidence from the criticar exclusivamente a la comunidad.
There was no critique, actually.
There was little bit of critique about history, Mostrar el pasatiempo de la gente en Tasajera, Magdalena.
So the correct answer is B.
¿So, what can we say, what can we assume about this little town?
¿So, actually, quite the opposite, right?
That was kind of a poor little town in was saying.
So this is not correct answer.
So that is the correct answer.
And the news reporter even said that it's historically very poor little town.
That is not correct.
Es una de las ciudades más grandes en Colombia and that is not correct.
Actually, it's a very small town.
And last question, En la oración todos tenemos que estar pendiente, la frase estar pendiente se puede sustituir sin cambiar su significado.
Por By the way, this phrase estar pendiente is used a lot by natives, so it's a good phrase to know.
And the meaning is A.
Estar independiente B.
Estar atento o vigilante c.
Estar frío d.
Estar contento and the correct answer is estar attento or vigilante.
These are our six questions with the answers.
Okay, So we answered these questions and let me tell you what I noticed and we are going to debrief.
Three things I want you to notice about what just happened.
First, I did not try to transcribe the audio.
The first listen was five things.
Who to whom, where, topic, tone.
That is a one sentence summary, easy to capture, hard to misuse.
Second, the 60 second preview window has the highest leverage minute in the whole section.
That is where I read the questions, identify keywords, set up the second listen with a job.
And third, the second listen wasn't passive.
I was hunting for specific details the questions were asking about the audio became a search problem, not a comprehension test.
One quick note.
On test day you won't be narrating your decisions out loud.
You will be doing the silently in your head, but the decisions are the same.
Practice the rhythm until it's reflexive.
Okay, before we wrap, back to the question I asked at the start.
Drop in the comments.
Which Spanish dialect is hardest for you on listening?
Iberian, Caribbean, Mexican or Andian?
I read every comment.
Most mentioned dialect shows up in my next demo.
