Welcome to this week's Praxis Spanish help.
Today I'm going to read a Spanish news article
and write
a 120 word response
to it in Spanish all in 18 minutes.
Watch how I separate summary from opinion under a
clock.
Quick
question before we dive.
Where do you read Spanish news?
Is it BBC Mundo,
Univision
or somewhere else?
Or El Pais?
Drop the source in the
comments.
The most mentioned source is the one I'll use for
the next
article.
Response demo
helps me find the kinds of articles you actually
encounter.
Quick setup.
The article response essay is task three
of three on the writing section.
It is also the task Most teachers blow.
18
minutes,
120
word minimum.
But the trick,
those 18 minutes have to cover
both
reading the article
and writing the response.
So the actual writing window is closer
to 14
minutes.
And this is our self scrap score guide.
So
our writing is going to be graded based on on
topic development,
organization,
vocabulary,
grammar,
spelling
register
and task completion.
So today I'm going to write and
self score my own writing based on this
rubric.
So my 18 minute split,
about 3 minutes to read the article
and plan
on scratch.
12 minutes to write,
3 minutes to review.
The reading and the planning happen together.
You're not reading for pleasure,
you're reading to write.
our writing structure.
Paragraph one
is a tight
summary of the article
in your own words,
maybe 30 words.
Then paragraph two and three
your reaction
with one specific reference back to the article.
In closing,
restate your reaction
concisely.
And I would also like to point out this difference
between
summary and opinion.
So the single biggest mistake on this task,
blending
summary and opinion in every paragraph.
Raters lose track of which is which
and it costs you on organization.
Keep summary in paragraph 1
reaction in everything
after
clean
line.
Today
I'm doing it
live.
Real article,
real 18 minute timer.
Let's go.
So before we get started,
just wanted to remind you that we are going to
read the article and then the
writing task.
After that we're going to
on a scratch surface.
We're going to have three labels Summary reaction
Closing using
the following sentence stems for the summary.
El artículo se trata de
reaction.
Estoy de acuerdo porque
in closing,
in resumen,
And this is our article
presentation of writing integrated skills.
And by the way,
this article was taken from Praxis Spanish
study
companion.
El siguiente artículo trata del desarrollo
sustentable y sostenible.
Desarrollo sustentable y sostenible en relación
con el calentamiento global.
So that is the article in the writing task
es basándose en la información del artículo que ha
leído y utilizando sus
palabras,
escriba un ensayo en el que
explique por qué es importante abordar el cambio
climático
con procesos que sean sustentables y sostenibles.
So,
this is our writing task.
I'm going to
go to my
scratch surface,
which is
Google Doc
and I copied and paste it
the
document,
the article
and
the writing task.
So we are going
to
on a scratch surface.
Quickly,
plan read and plan
in three minutes.
Okay,
I'm going to set my timers three minutes
and
so three minutes
go.
Okay,
I'm going to
find out what is the main idea,
And also
I want to find out
cuál es la diferencia
entre desarrollo sustentable y desarrollo
sostenible.
Según
Naciones Unidas,
el desarrollo sustentable
incluye procesos
para preservar,
cuidar y proteger los recursos naturales del
planeta para beneficio
de las generaciones
actuales y futuras
sin considerar las necesidades
culturales.
However,
en cambio,
desarrollo sostenible
atiende a factores culturales
y medioambientales de la generación actual.
So that is the difference.
I'm just going to highlight that the difference
entre los dos conceptos no son muy evidentes y
muchas veces se consideran palabras sinónimas.
No obstante,
la particularidad de ambos tipos de desarrollo se
ubica
en la
intervención
humana.
¿So that's the difference,
right?
Intervention humana pores so ambos terminals
applicant a la responsibility social necessary
para vivir en equilibrio con el medio ambiente.
¿OK,
so I now what's the now?
The summary.
So this is our sentence stems,
we're going to use
el artículo se trata de.
Se trata de los problemas,
procesos
de los
procesos
sustentables,
sostentables
sostentables
y
sostenibles.
sostenibles.
Sostenibles.
Para
abordar,
abordar,
para abordar el
cambio,
cambio climatico.
And that's just
one quick sentence,
right,
This is our plan.
OK,
I'm just gonna use also Google Doc,
I know during
your test you're going to have a scratch paper,
you're not gonna be able
so that's our time is up,
so three minutes up.
So
reacción Estoy de acuerdo de.
¿Estoy de acuerdo de
los procesos,
right?
De
los
ambos,
ambos
procesos,
ambos procesos y en resumen
es importante,
importante.
importante.
And that's kind of our quick
plan.
So now we are going to have twelve minutes
writing our
essay,
so in our essay we need to make sure number one,
have a summary
about thirty words.
¿El artículo afirma que,
según el autor,
right?
¿Using those sentence stems
and plus two or three reporting words,
verbs,
and you can use these verbs
such as afirmar,
sostener,
señalar,
indicar,
and number two,
reaction about seventy words,
reference one,
detail one evidence from the article like we teach
our students,
right?
Find the good evidence,
so that's what we're gonna do and then number
three,
closing
about twenty words,
we're going to restate our reaction concisely.
So that is the plan when we are writing
our
essay.
So now I'm going to set my timer
twelve minutes to write
and then I'm going to start writing using my plan.
So I'm gonna start with
artículo.
El artículo trata
de los procesos.
¿I'm just gonna
actually copy and paste because
I can do that,
but I know during the test you're not gonna be
able to do that,
so
there is no need for me to just
write the same thing,
right?
OK.
El artículo trata de los procesos sustentables y
sustenibles para aportar el
cambio climático.
Es importante que.
Es importante que.
Abordemos.
Es importante que abordemos,
Abordemos el cambio climático.
Abordemos el
cambio climático
con
los
procesos.
Que sean.
Sustentables.
Isostenitis.
now I'm gonna write el cambio climático.
So that was my
resumen.
Now
I'm going to write about my reaction.
El cambio
climático
va
a
suceder.
Va a suceder
si lo queremos.
Si lo queremos
o no.
Pero
cómo
enfrentar,
como enfrentar y tratar
con
este
cambio,
este cambio está,
Está
en
las
manos
de
nuestra
generación.
Nuestra generación y
las
generaciones
que
vienen.
Según el artículo.
¿So again,
we're going to
use the evidence from the article,
right?
Según el artículo,
Según el artículo,
hay
muchas
maneras
que,
hay muchas maneras que
podamos.
Résolver
este
problema,
este problema de cambio
climático,
de cambio climático.
So I am going to read my writing and see if
it makes sense
and
check for
any errors.
no,
sino cre
soluciones con processos quesan del largo plazo y
protejan a
loas proximas generationis
sigun el articulo processos sustentables y
sostenibles como el reciclaje de boteas de
plastico ovidrio carton y otros elemiantos como
acetes e
accidentes agricola son inevitable.
Tables y sostenibles.
So this is our writing.
And let's see,
how many words
do we have?
Do I have so far?
Word count.
Okay,
it has 165.
So
more than
expected.
So
it's okay.
Right.
but I
during
test of course
there is that pressure time pressure.
So it's gonna be probably
less than
that.
So three minutes
last pass.
So
make sure that.
Check one Clean line is summary clearly separated
from reaction.
Check two.
Article reference.
Did you reference the article specifically?
Not generically.
So in our writing we have one specific reference,
right?
One specific.
This is the one that's specific.
I'm gonna highlight in yellow.
Seguna articulo processos sustentables y
sostenibles como el risiclaje de batees de
plastico vibrio cartoniotra elementos coma acetes.
Right,
so that's my specific
evidence check number three.
Fix obvious agreement,
conjugation and accent errors.
Okay,
so now that
I am done with
writing and number of words
I'm going to use this score scoring guidelines for
writing.
So topic development,
directly relates to the topic.
Topic well developed.
I'm gonna give myself
at
advanced low level
organization
response is well organized and generally coherent.
I'm gonna say
at
vocabulary varied vocabulary appropriate for the
content content and used with precision
I'm gonna say approaching probably
I could have
used
better
more precise vocabulary
Grammar demonstrates a mid high or high degree of
control a variety of structures.
There were definitely some
subjunctives so I'm gonna give myself at
spelling
register at task completion at
so that would be my
own
scoring.
That's how I would self score myself.
So debrief
just three things I would like you to notice.
Number one
I just made sure that my sample summary state in
paragraph one
and I also made sure at least there is one
evidence from the text
specific
detail
that kind of
proves that I read the
article right
and also made sure that I used
reporting verbs
like affirmar,
sostiene,
signala
so before we wrap.
